November 2016

November has blessed ICDM with more volunteers from different professions and different part of the world.  Their presence enhances and strengthen our programmes, and help to take the goals of the organisation forward.  ICDM is working towards improving the lives of the youth in our communities and creating a platform for mass participation in almost all sports.  Through the kindness of our partners and stakeholders we are able to offer more variety in sports and aid the development of our youth through educational programmes and cultural development.

In the second week of November ICDM welcomed two United States of America volunteers. They will both be staying with us for a few weeks.  Megan and Arek are involved in the farm project which is a project we are incorporating with our programmes to uplift the youth.  Farming is a rare career paths taken by youth in the community.  The volunteers are also much involved in the ICDM after school programme.  In addition they are both are helping with some administration work.

Furthermore ICDM welcomed two volunteers from Ecuador who came the week later after Arek and Megan.  These volunteers came with many new fresh ideas on games for kids to play in our after school programme. They introduced a new Olympic Sport to our programmes.  The kids fell in love with Badminton and the idea of playing sport which is rare in our communities motivates them to excel on the global stage.

Our programmes have been running with smoothly as usual, even though it school holidays.  The kids were so happy to be back on their BMX bikes - thanks to coach Mazwi and Napa for making sure the BMX project is back in full force. ICDM, in partnership with Department of Sport and Recreation and with Be Active Sport, are introducing the Triathlon into the area.  The youth will get a chance to take part in triathlons; to be trained and prepared to compete on a global stage.  Next week ICDM will be hosting an indoor sport competition focusing on table tennis and chess.

At the 8th November 2016 15 students from Ndunakazi Primary School and Intongela Primary School had the unique chance to participate in an amazing intercultural Skype Chat with the Kirkby Stephen Grammar School in England. The students had to the chance to talk about global issues and about the 17 global goals set up by the UNICEF organisation. The kids had been prepared in a daily workshop led by Chris and Thando beforehand. They learnt about global goals, how we can protect our environment and that it is the most important art to focus on “living together”. Furthermore they learnt how to talk on Skype and to find out the types of questions which could be asked to kids of a different social and cultural backgrounds. The Skype interview at Hillcrest High School was a huge success. Sensitive topics had been discussed but also topics affecting kids at their age such as soccer, hobbies, teachers and school. We thank Kate Knight for making this project possible and also Hillcrest High School for letting us being part of this awesome project. We hope that this project can be maintained in the future.
